Oru Durooha Sahacharyathil brings Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval and Kunchacko Boban back together after Nna Thaan Case Kodu, and that alone is enough to get people to pay attention. That film worked because of how sharply it balanced satire and storytelling without losing grip, so naturally there is a certain expectation here, especially since Ratheesh is not someone who repeats himself blindly.
This time, he is bringing in Dileesh Pothan and Chidambaram as part of the cast, which makes the lineup a bit more interesting than usual. Both of them come with a strong filmmaking voice of their own, and when directors step in front of the camera, there is always that added curiosity about how much of their sensibility seeps into the performance.
Positioned as a dark comedy, the film is aiming for a Vishu release window, going up against titles like Pallichattambi and Vaazha 2. That festive slot usually favours films with a clear hook, and dark comedy is a tricky space in that context. It works only if the writing is tight. Otherwise, it can very easily drift into something that feels tonally confused.
Ratheesh’s last outing, Sureshanteyum Sumalathayudeyum Hrudayahariyaya Pranayakadha, did not just fail, it triggered a larger conversation about budgeting and whether directors are losing control over scale. So this film, whether it likes it or not, comes with that baggage. There will be a certain amount of scrutiny on how contained or indulgent this one turns out to be.
For Chidambaram, who is still working on his directorial Balan, this marks another acting attempt after Rifle Club. It is still early to say how seriously he is taking acting as a parallel track, but choices like this suggest he is at least open to exploring that space.
Right now, Oru Durooha Sahacharyathil feels like one of those films where the writing will decide everything. With Ratheesh, that has always been the case. When it clicks, it really clicks. When it does not, the cracks are hard to ignore.
