The Aadu series has had a rather interesting journey in Malayalam cinema. When Aadu: Oru Bheekara Jeevi Aanu released in 2015, it did not make much impact at the box office initially. However, over time the film slowly built a loyal fan base. The quirky characters, offbeat humour, and especially the unforgettable Shaji Pappan and his gang helped the film gain a strong cult status among viewers.

Encouraged by this growing popularity, the makers returned with Aadu 2 in 2017. This time the response was completely different. The sequel connected instantly with audiences and went on to become a major commercial success in Kerala, firmly establishing the franchise.

Now the team is returning with Aadu 3: One Last Ride – Part 1. Interestingly, the story is planned as a two-part film, which means the narrative is expected to continue in another installment that may arrive around 2027. When the project was first discussed, it was described as a 3D road movie, though the recent promotional material and trailers suggest that the film may be taking a slightly different direction.

Much of the familiar cast is returning, with Jayasurya once again playing the iconic role of Shaji Pappan. The film is directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas, who created the franchise, and produced by Friday Film House in association with Venu Kunnappilly.

For Jayasurya, the film carries particular importance. The Aadu films remain the biggest commercial successes of his career, and the performance of this installment could help reaffirm his box-office presence. A strong run for the film could also generate momentum for his upcoming big-budget fantasy project Kathanaar.

The film is equally significant for director Midhun Manuel Thomas. The Aadu series played a key role in shaping his career. His most recent release, the Jayaram-starrer Ozler, performed moderately well and was considered a semi-hit in Kerala. With Aadu 3, expectations are naturally high given the popularity of the franchise.

For Friday Film House, the stakes are also considerable. Their last major commercial success came with Aadu 2, and with Aadu 3 reportedly mounted on a larger scale, the investment is significantly higher. Industry reports suggest that the film’s budget may cross ₹60 crore, which is substantial for a Malayalam production.

Aadu 3: One Last Ride – Part 1 is currently expected to release worldwide on March 19, 2026.
